Plasma Renin Activity in Patients with Chronic Renal Failure

Abstract

Twenty-seven cases of chronic renal failure, treated with artificial hemodialysis, were studied clinically at Chonbuk National University Hospital during the Period four years, from January 1984 to August 1987. The renal diagnosis was made on the basis of microscopic examination of tissue by renal biopsy.
Fifty-two percents of these patients had a normal plasma renin activity, 33% high plasma renin activity and 15% low plasma renin activity. The mean plasma renin activity in patients with nephrosclerosis was significantly higher than in those with primarily tubular/ intersitial disorders or glomerulonephritis. The mean plasma renin activity in uncontrollable hypertensive group was significantly higher than those found in patients with normal blood pressure or controllable hypertension.
These results showed that uncontrollable hypertensive chronic renal failure and high plasma renin activity during hemodialysis may suggest nephrosclerosis as the underlying renal disease.
